Four Ways to Keep Dating App Convos Going

How to Overcome Internal Awkwardness

@chogiseok

Dating app conversations are the first hurdle in every relationship. Rather, you’re the first to reach out or not. Coding has blessed us with perfectly pointed prompts for that first one-liner.

It’s never easy talking to a stranger, especially one we’ve met through an algorithm. Conversations on dating apps are always slightly awkward. All parties know something is off talking to someone online, but that’s the sci-fi world we live in.

Meeting a potential date IRL is still possible. Maybe it’s your preferred form of date recruitment? However, no one is immune to the allure of playing the socially acceptable Hot or Not game on our phones. If you don’t find yourself in a dating app conversation now, you’ll be in the same predicament as the rest of us soon enough.

The first step of a dating app convo is sending the first message. For Bumble users, the women make the first move, but for the rest, anyone can throw the first bait. Sending that first text or follow up to their shooting their shot texts is typically the easiest part. The conversation that follows usually stays on course. It’s the conversation after the prompt that gets us feeling antsy…

You may not want to keep the conversation going if it dries out. You’re that interested, and well, you don’t know them. But what if you’re still intrigued? You need a little more info before you exchange the digits or a risky text to start the banter test.

In case of any internal awkward silences (the ones that only you feel, but the other person does not know your ailments), we’ve pulled together four ways to keep the pot boiling.

Go Sleuthing

Go back to their profile and look at their photos. See if you can spot something different—a drink, a funny shirt, food, or something that isn’t so obvious at first glance. Think of a question, soft sarcastic remark, or prompt them to tell you about the photo of the squash comparison…

Get Personal

Ask them how long they’ve lived in the city you’re in. Rather, their answer is short or long. It can prompt them to ask you to show them around town, or vice versa, they can show you their favorite spots. If all else fails, you may get some new drink spots to check out with your friends lol.

The Banter Test

Sharing similar humor is a good sign that you’ll get on IRL. An initial banter conversation can get the juices flowing for both of you. Don't be afraid to be outspoken. Send that risky text! Remember, you’ve never met them. You have nothing to lose. If they can’t handle your banter, then maybe they aren’t worth your time. Thank you, NEXT!

Be Blunt

There’s nothing wrong with being upfront. Already feel like you want to move to texts? Ask them for their number. There’s always something sexy about being the first to ask. You know what you want. Take control of the narrative and get it for yourself!
