If last week’s rain marathon in NYC didn’t give us a fair warning, then maybe we all aren’t worthy of the name New Yorker. As another fall month slips us by, so does the luxury of escaping to the outside for a break. Whether it’s socially or professionally, getting into the fresh air could be the quick alleviation we are hoping for. Except as the weather cools, it may soon force us to look for solace indoors.

In the name of self-love, we should take advantage of the perfect sixty-degree weather to hold on to our sanity just a little longer. Holidays are lining up on our agenda, and it’s more important than ever to remind ourselves that we come first. Rather, you're drained from dating, social obligations, or work.

We pulled together a list of ways to increase the outside time that easily integrates into your busy schedule.

Solo Activities

  1. Grab your favorite book and head to your nearest park to read. Set up shop on a bench or lay down your lucky picnic blanket to enjoy a lay while you read. Remember, bring a jacket for that crisp breeze.

  2. Hot Girl Walk: Mental Health Check. Walking is self-love, but take it a step further and put your phone on Do Not Disturb. Carve out time for yourself by strolling around with your own mind. This allows you to gain some perspective on those nasty anxiety bugs floating in your head.

  3. Stop and actually listen to street performers. That smooth jazz on a Sunday will have you feeling all kinds of ways.

Outside Date Ideas

  1. Walk in the park and people-watch. (Sitting on a bench is preferred)

  2. Coffee shop date at a place with outdoor seating. (Try coffee shops with multiple drinks and food options. I.e., alcohol, tea, and coffee.)

  3. A game of cuddle putt-putt golf (think of wearing your date’s jacket when it gets a little chilly)

Friend Outings

  1. Outdoor Vintage Flea Market. Vintage shopping is all the rage and the perfect outdoor fall activity. Many flea markets are outdoors currently, so check your local vintage seller and see where they are setting up shop. New Yorkers try the Grand Bizarre on W 77th every Sunday.

  2. Text your friend who lives close by and meet up on the corner for a stroll. Find a friend who’s happy to walk in silence or chat about life. We need options when we’re low.

  3. The Ultimate Getaway. We are all trying to save after this summer’s escapades but want one more before the weather gets chilly. Grab your closest buds, rent a Zipcar, and find an Airbnb a couple of hours out of the city. There are plenty of slightly uncharted towns around your city. It’s time to make your Gilmore Girls dreams come to life.
